“I AM FREEDOM: The Fannie Lou Hamer Story”, co-written by Sharese “Reecy” Jackson & William Barry Scott; starring Sharese "REECY" Jackson is a one act tribute to civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer. The play challenges audiences to stand in the face of hate, bigotry, and injustice, while taking you on a journey in which Reecy portrays six (6) characters during the height of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi. Reecy showcases her musical talents as she belts out freedom songs and spirituals all while morphing from one character to the next with seamless transitions.
Originally produced by The American Negro Playwright Theatre, a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization, founded by Barry Scott. The ANPT’s mission is to foster a public appreciation of theatrical productions written by or about the culture and heritage of African-Americans. In essence, we are “telling stories that must be told”. Founded in 1992, ANPT is an organization that is committed to making a difference in the local and world community one performance at a time.
